Q. Question?
hi all
i neeed help,
its our first wedding anniversary this weekend and ive not planned anything.
problem is weather is terrific this weekend to go to the lake district or york. going to bath is so expensive, we live in manchester and will be travelling by train. hotels in bath are really expensive,
can anyone recommend something else,
i thought of going to birmingham... but its not romantic.
anyone know any nice hotel with spa, or cottage near manchester, budget is 300 pounds including all and 2 nights stay, friday and saturday.
A. Best Answer: Why go away for the weekend? A few weeks ago it my 1st anniversary and we went for a lovely meal and stayed at home. But it didn't stop there, we went to the place where we first met and reminisced. I did lots of romantic things throughout the day e.g. a bath together filled with love hearts (dissolvable) I made a homemade card filled with a poem about our 1st year together and what I hope the future holds. I made a love heart card filled with inscriptions of reasons why I love him and another card with I love you in different languages. You don't have to spend money to be romantic. I made up a CD with our song and other romantic songs on it. Being creative and making things from the heart are much more romantic and meaningful and provide sentimental value for years to come. Have a great anniversary :)
Q. Question?
my husband has a special birthday this year & always wanted to go the lake district, but i need help, as i have no idea where to go, stay in a hotel or cottage, what is there to do in the lake district etc.
so please if you have been to the lakes than can you help me make up my mind.
Thank you for your replies already, my husband is not a very sporty person, but loves history, castles, museums etc, but just really to get away & to relax.
A. Best Answer: Depends what he's into. Windermere is obviously the most famous, but gets incredibly crowded and therefore even 3*B&Bs can get up to 70 per night or more. We stayed out near Ullswater, about a 2 mile drive from the lake, it's quieter but still plenty of hill walking, (gentle and more demanding) and good transport links. If he likes steam engines you've got The Ratty out at Ravenglass, the stately home at Muncaster Castle and you can go horse riding (heavy horses) around nearby Hycemoor, which has a lovely flat, sandy beach.
If he's a swimmer, try the Great North Swim in late summer, or any of the many watersports available on many of the lakes. We really enjoyed the outer areas away from the throngs of coach tours, and also, the cost of accomodation was more value for money. If you're going anytime in the busy season, book ahead and ring around and haggle using other prices for rents. Stay midweek rather than weekends to save even more. ;)
Q. Question?
I am wanting to go to the lake district with my girlfriend..
for the first time...
there are so many places there where to start? whats the most common place to see and get a hotel in ..
we plan to go there for 7 days.. what is a must see?
anyone have any experience there?
A. Best Answer: Keswick would be a good place to base yourself as it has plenty of good hotels, Inns and B&Bs. Also it's convenient to get to many fells, and tourist spots. Selection of restaurants, leisure facilities and cinema too....
Go walk a fell (catbells near derwentwater is good, gentle and close to keswick, or Skiddaw if feeling fit and weather is good), and visit Beatrice Potter exhibition/house (the girlfriend will love it!)

A. Best Answer: Buy Daltons Weekly - that's the paper that most commercial estate agents use to advertise properties. It comes out weekly on a Thursday and you can pick it up at most newsagents.

Q. Question?
Hi its my partners 50th birthday next weekend, 22nd Aug. Due to unforseen circumstances our original plans have fallen through.
Can anyone recommend a luxury hotel in the Lake District that we might be able to get into. I have been going round and round in circles on google looking for one today, something central and something a bit special would be great (if im lucky enough to get a room at such short notice!!).
Thanks in advance :-)) x
A. Best Answer: try ringing one of the tourist information offices, details here
http://www.southlakeland.gov.uk/default.aspx?page=2514
places often ring through their late availability to the tourist information so they might have some ideas ... I did it last week as I'd spent hours trawling through websites looking for a cottage at the beginning of Sept and they found me a place straight away
Q. Question?
hi there.me and my long term partner booked a civil ceremony at a registry office in the lake district, were we planed to get married on our own.we were planning on telling our families when we get back.the reason for this is that we both have interferring families, who we love but drive us crazy.
the thing is,my parents have decided to go away last minute for 2 weeks so they wouldnt be here when we got back,so we decided to tell them.they were ok with it,saying it was up to us.but my sister was really nasty about it.saying its weird to get married just the 2 of u without family.which has made me feel a bit sad as all we wanted was a very quiet affair.and plus we havnt got a lot of money.we are stopping in a gorgeous hotel and just wanted to be alone.do u think this is a bit strange for us to do this.i no its not what most people do.but surely i shouldnt be made to feel guilty should i? x
A. Best Answer: My fiance and I are getting married tomorrow and wanted the exact same thing. There's nothing wrong with it.
I wish I would have stuck to my guns about it just being us because I have now been bullied into having a big ceremony and an even bigger reception. I was trying to save money as we are expecting a baby next month but now I have ended up dropping almost $3,000 on something I don't want to do.
Don't feel badly. Your wedding is about you, not your family. Stick to what you want and don't let your sister make you feel bad about it. If you change your minds a few years down the road you can have a big fancy ceremony to renew your vows.
Good luck and congratulations!!
Q. Question?
OK, apart from the obvious honeymoon activities (and we've already booked a hotel thanks) we're looking for recommended things to do when on honeymoon in the Lake District. We've never been to the area so want to make the most of it, but don't want to be the typical tourist and go only to the tourist 'honeypots'. Any one with inside knowledge / any secrets about the Lake District they'd like to share?!
Many thanks!
PS. Going during the first week of September and expecting rain lol!
A. Best Answer: Get the Ullswater ferry from Glenridding to Howtown then walk back along the Lakeside, preferably stopping for a beer/ pub meal at the White Lion in Patterdale. Should take you about 3 hours and is a stunningly beautiful, mostly fairly flat walk:

Visit Castlerigg stone circle and Aira Force

Go rowing on Grasmere, boats on hire from Fairy Glen. Take a flask and some cake and drift on the lake!
GoLakes has some really nice day itineraries depending on your interests:

If you have a little money to spare and want to treat yourselves why not have lunch or dinner at the incredible Michelin starred Sharrow Bay with its amazing views?

Avoid Windermere like the plague if you want to avoid day trippers who just want to buy ice-cream and shop uuuuurgh!!
Have fun!! Hx
Q. Question?
We are hoping to get to the Lake District (UK) for a week's break and would prefer not to go self-catering, for once. We have one dog and she's crate trained and we'd have her in it overnight, and out in the car during our mealtimes. I've approached Hotels saying they are 'dog friendly' on their websites, only to find this is NOT the case. One replied recently saying they could not accept dogs in their rooms but had a 'small cottage at the back of the Hotel with 5 rooms which were dog friendly'. I'm afraid I'm not about to be pushed to a 'quarantine area' at the rear of a Hotel - and incidentally be charged the same rate as a 'normal' Hotel room + a dog fee, because I want to travel with my dog. When dog owners in the UK holiday in the UK, they normally want to bring their dogs with them - otherwise I for one would go abroad where we'd get far more value for money in any case. We'd be looking at spending £1000 for one week at this Hotel. I've found this attitude towards people with dogs especially bad in the Lake District, and I'd be interested to hear other's experiences, and where there might be a truly dog friendly Hotel(s) in or around Keswick.
